Power comparisons and clinical meaning of outcome measures in assessing treatment effect in cancer cachexia: secondary analysis from a randomised pilot multimodal intervention trial
New clinical trials in cancer cachexia are essential. The selection of valid and useful outcome measures is a critical step when designing trials and there is no consensus as to the optimal outcome measures. In this secondary analysis from a multimodal intervention trial, we investigated cachexia outcome measures for their sensitivity to change and effect sizes between treatment groups. Large variation in sample sizes needed to detect differences for the various outcomes were reported. The current article underpin the importance of cachexia research both testing and evaluating relevant outcomes until an evidence-based consensus on what to measure is reached.
