Newsweek, in cooperation with Statista, conducts an annual ranking of the world's best hospitals. The ranking has been carried out every year since 2019.
This year's award includes data from 2,400 hospitals in 30 countries. The countries have been selected based on several factors, such as standard of living/life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals and data availability.
In the 2024 ranking, 15 Norwegian hospitals have been assessed, and 6 of them have made the list of the 250 best hospitals in the world:
- Oslo University Hospital, which is also Europe's largest hospital, is in 29th place and has a score of 91.8 per cent.
- St. Olavs ends up in 138th place, with a score of 88.1 per cent.
- Haukeland University Hospital – 151st place and 79.6 per cent.
- University Hospital Northern Norway – 163rd place and 78.87 percent.
- Diakonhjemmet hospital - 239th place and 78.03 percent.
- Akershus University Hospital – 248 places, with 77.99 per cent
In last year's ranking, OUS was number 37.
Newsweek states that each hospital's score is based on:
- Online survey:
which has been sent out to 85,000 hospital managers, doctors and other healthcare personnel. Participants were asked to recommend hospitals in their own country as well as in other countries. Recommendations to one's own employer/hospital were not permitted. - Patient satisfaction:
Analysis of public data from post-hospital patient satisfaction surveys. - Quality measures:
Data on quality measures from a variety of public sources are collected from most countries. These vary between the countries, but for example it concerns data on quality of care for specific treatments, data on hygiene measures and patient safety and data on the number of patients per doctor and per nurse. - Implementation of PROMs: In the fall and winter of 2023, Newsweek and Statista reached out to hospitals and conducted a survey on the implementation and use of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), which are standardized questionnaires completed by patients to assess their experience and outcomes, an impact on the total score of a hospital.
